Rotterdam Booster Station Upgrade

A Dutch utility replaced three 1990s boosters with AF-C-150 duty-standby pairs; energy per cubic metre dropped 22 percent with no downtime during switchover.

01 / Background

Project Background

The utility operates a district booster station serving 40,000 residents. The existing fixed-speed boosters from the 1990s ran deep in throttle losses at night and leaked at the gland.

The station needed a like-for-like swap inside a two-week shutdown window, with SCADA integration kept on the existing protocol.

02 / Requirement

The Requirement

Flow of 210 cubic metres per hour at 58 metres head, N+1 redundancy, and noise below 65 dB(A) at one metre because of a nearby residential wall.

The client also wanted energy reporting per pump to feed their municipal dashboard.

03 / Solution

Pumps And Configuration Supplied

Two AF-C-150 boosters in duty-standby on one baseplate with common suction and discharge headers, each driven by a 30 kW IE3 motor on a variable speed drive.

The control cabinet keeps the Modbus register map of the old station, so the SCADA integration was unchanged.

Pumps

2 x AF-C-150, 210 m3/h at 58 m, 2950 rpm, cast iron with bronze impeller

Motors And Drives

2 x 30 kW IE3, 400 V 50 Hz, ABB-compatible VSD with sleep-and-check mode

Baseplate And Headers

Common galvanized baseplate, DN150 suction and DN125 discharge headers, isolated by butterfly valves

Controls

Pressure transducer on discharge header, Modbus RTU map matched to the existing SCADA

05 / Result

Result After Commissioning

Energy per cubic metre fell 22 percent against the old fixed-speed set, verified from the utility's own billing data over three months.

The switchover was completed in nine days, and the station has run two maintenance intervals without a seal change.
